I have a few of these preordered already. I have heard a lot about Long Island Compromise, but I really disliked Fleishman is in trouble. I know I’m in the minority with that, but it was a one star for me so it’s hard for me to get excited for the new book. I will wait for some reviews and see though.

Kevin Barry's The Heart in Winter is up there with Percival Everett's James and Carys Davies' Clear as the best 2024 releases I've read this year. Not sure if it would be your cup of tea, but I can't recommend it highly enough. Especially if the concept of a winter western by an Irish wordsmith sounds appealing.

53 minutes of Greg on a cloudy Thursday when I’m feeling a bit blaah. Fabulous! The Hypocrite, The Message, and This is Happiness went right onto my list. I will be listening to This is Happiness very soon. I’m also interested in the new Rumaan Alam, Entitlement, because of how freaked out (in a very good way) I was by Leave the World Behind. I also found out that there is a new Attica Locke coming in the fall, which I think is the conclusion of her Highway 59 series, so that’s now on my list. Claudia Pineiro’s Time of the Flies is coming in August and is already preordered at my local. Have you looked at the Waterstone’s Debut Fiction Prize shortlist? It looks really solid. I just ordered The Silence In Between by Josie Ferguson which sounds terrific. Waterstone’s description of Martyr sort of turned me around on that book and I think I will be getting to it soon. I recently found out about a horror/noir book called William by Mason Coile that sounds delicious and went right on my list. And Babylonia, by Costanza Casati, who wrote my second favorite book from last year, Clytemnestra, just came out today in the UK. I am so excited to get that! There are others too, of course. One book that I think maybe you’ll be interested in just came out today in the UK. It’s called The Betrayal of Thomas True by AJ West and is historical fiction about molly houses in 1715 London. It’s flagged as a thriller, which I know isn’t your jam, but I thought the subject matter might intrigue you. My copy is on the way and I can’t wait to get it! So you are cool with magical children but not with ghosts? 🤔

Piranesi is one of my favourite books of all time. The reader is left with the central mystery: why did Piranesi alone survive the Labyrinth? It erodes your mind like water wears away rock. What if his methodical mind was only half of the reason and the other half is that he was already a stranger in a strange land? I leave you to unpack this puzzle box of a book for yourself.

We just had our 4th of July viewing of Jaws (may have to re-read that book. Great books to think about, again, Small Joys is added to my list. Thank you. Just to say I was shopping unprepared for a 'gay man ' story book, but suddenly realised how many were about the struggles, the hidden , non accepting love, so when I asked for help in my local book shop they said that there are love stories now especially in YA that are happy, not about the struggle of acceptance from family or personal point of view and just a delight to read. Things are moving forward! So they recommend, ' Less ' by Andrew Sean Greer, I brought this for my friend's son who I just adore and hope he enjoys it. Wanted to mention, not sure if available in the US.

Not sure if this will change your mind or anything but I wholeheartedly believe you guys should give the series version of Fellow Travelers a chance because it is drastically different from the book with the addition of the 3 decades in between and added characters. It also subdued a lot of the heavy political part (but still provided the necessary context of the period) to centered more on the love story which painted both of the protagonists in a much better and nuanced light. And if the plot still doesn't work for you then you can always watch it for the chemistry between Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey. Anyway, love your videos as always and hope to hear more amazing recommendations from you guys in the future 💗✨

I wasn’t convinced on Small Joys when you first mentioned it, but after hearing both you and Joel talk about it, I’m sold! It is on audio, interestingly read by author Paul Mendez! Definitely going to listen to that. I am picking up Homebody at the library tomorrow. The Safekeep sounds interesting. I’m a bit concerned about the amount of religion. That’s a big turnoff for me. I’m just going by whim as usual in July. There are a few books coming out on the 4th in the U.K. that I preordered, which I’ll get to as soon as they arrive. After a day like today, I need something new and exciting to occupy my mind for a bit. And I’m still trying to get back to Glorious Exploits, which the library just kindly renewed for a third week for me.

I think there are mentioned of Isabel going to church in Safekeep but nothing overt--it's more to hammer in that she's a regimented person as you get to know her. I don't think there are any explicit religious references in the book at all. Reading on a whim in July sounds delightful!

I am still listening to The Dutch House and so loving it. What I love the most about it is that it is a brother/sister sibling story and the two are so close…like my brother Jon and I…he is my brother that died of AIDS when he was 34 and I was 35. My judgement of a book is frequently having to do with whether it is realistic enough to touch me deeply. This one is working. For Pride month I read Tinman also…it touched me too. Yesterday when I got home from the ocean I opened your sympathy card…more tears, but I am not afraid of tears. Thank you so much. It was beautiful. I also got to hold Roxy’s cremains in her pretty box. I’m weird…I pet the box and gave it a kiss. I’m avoiding dog books for a while. I’m painting Dem rocks to beat the band though. What a day it’s been.

I totally understand--we have the boxes with the ashes of Guinness and Jameson displayed and we say goodnight to them every night. I need to get to The Dutch House at some point. Hang in there!

I read Tin Man and enjoyed it. I agreed with your opinions on Tin Man. I felt sad for Michael not keeping up with the friendship with Annie and Ellis. I also read The Sleeping Car Porter, a gentle man focused on his future. I appreciated how his fellow porters looked out for him.

I didn’t manage to get to Sleeping Car Porter this month. Hopefully soon!

I read Tin Man a couple of years ago and I loved it :). I also have Still Life by the same author in my library, I should read it soon, I’ve heard wonderful things about it. I haven’t read Brokeback Mountain, but I’ve seen the movie and cried my eyes out, such a heart-breaking story.

I have a copy of Still Life that I need to get to now. Brokeback is so sad!

Only two books for me in June. To the Moon and Back by N.R. Walker and That Night by Alice McDermott. That Night was a Pulitzer finalist the year that Beloved won. I enjoyed reading it. I am now reading Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell.

I hope you enjoy Hamnet! I haven’t read that McDermott book.

I would never consider “skipping voting”. It’s a privilege and a responsibility and I take it seriously. The rage and disappointment I feel when I hear anyone not treating it as such is crippling sometimes… I’ve been “goldibooking” for over a month now… It happens every summer for me. I just get in a reading slump during the hot months and I have a hard time getting out of it. I usually revert to non-fiction audiobooks; I might as well learn something new since I can’t focus on fiction :). I have high hopes for Sarah Perry’s Enlightenment, which I just got from the library, to hopefully get me out of this slump.

Brokeback Mountain crushed me! I felt like I could relate to every characters emotions in that story. I cried for 3 days!!!
